The beauty and activities along the seashore change with the seasons, adding spice and variety. There are excellent locations for wave, whale, sunset and storm watching, and the beach is a treasure trove for collecting driftwood, agates, shells and floats. Large rocks emerging from the sea create perfect pockets for tide pooling during low tides, and beach hiking, surfing, windsurfing and fishing challenge adventure seekers. 15 public beach accesses welcome those who wish to indulge! Devils Lake, deep only in terms of Indian folklore, is 1/3 mile wide, 3 miles long, and reaches a depth of only 22 feet. Nine species of freshwater fish beckon the fisherman, while water sports such as windsurfing, water skiing, knee-boarding and jet skiing engage other sports enthusiasts. Flowing from Devils Lake is the "D" River, which holds the title of the "World's Shortest River". From its source at Devils Lake, the river reaches its destination of the Pacific in a mere 120 feet. Fly your own kite or watch the spectacular aerial displays of color and shape at the D River Wayside. Voted the "Kite Capital of the World", Lincoln City receives steady winds because of our unique location on the 45th parallel. Or, try all seven golf courses for a smorgasbord of birdies, bogeys and eagles. For the weather enthusiast, one of the greatest Lincoln City thrills without the chills is watching a feisty coastal storm from a cozy perch. Turbulent seas and howling winds set the sand and your imagination swirling as you peer into the eye of the storm. Storm watching is best during the winter months. Depoe Bay http://www.boat-links.com/DepoeBay/ Festival / Wooden Boat Festival and Crab Feed Located on the central Oregon coast, Depoe Bay has become a favorite of coastal visitors for its unique tidal attractions and a variety of dining and shopping opportunities. For several million years the Pacific Ocean has been carving its way through the tough basalt formations that form the sides of Depoe Bay, resulting in the smallest year-round navigable harbor in the world. Indian Style Salmon Bake This event is held every year on the third Saturday in September in a picturesque setting on the south end of the "Worlds Smallest Harbor". Watch the boats in the harbor against a back drop of one of the oldest bridges in Oregon while enjoying a meal of fresh locally caught salmon. Cooked over an open fire on wooden stakes, the salmon is cooked to perfection and served with cole slaw, tartar sauce, lemon wedges, garlic bagel, sherbet, and your choice of drinks. Enjoy your meal and the entertainment and then take a FREE shuttle to downtown for shopping, people and whale watching. Otter Rock Otter Rock is a small community approximately seven miles north of Newport, on the Oregon Coast. Nestled next to Depoe Bay, its semi-sheltered beaches are known for their idyllic summer conditions and dramatic winter storms. It is considered a favorite place for surfers of all levels, and has several surf shops to prove it. It is known for its long-boarding competitions and attracts surfers from around the world. Although the rocks are off limits to humans, the waters around the rocks are a favorite location for whitewater kayakers. Kayakers should keep in mind however, that the surf can be rough and unpredictable in this area, especially during storm action. Newport http://www.thecityofnewport.net/ City of Newport Newport, located on the central Oregon coast, has been a favorite tourist destination since the 1860s. The small, succulent Yaquina Bay oyster made Newport world famous, and a popular destination for seafood lovers. Now commercially grown, visitors can buy the oysters and watch them being processed at the Oregon Oyster Farm. Other favorite Newport activities include visiting the Yaquina Head Lighthouse, the Yaquina Head Outstanding Natural Area and the Yaquina Head Interpretive Center. Climb to the top of the 93 foot Yaquina Head Lighthouse, and see the spectacular view from Oregon's tallest lighthouse. In the Natural Area, visitors can find coastal sea birds such as cormorants, murres, and guillemonts, as well as harbor seals, sea lions and grey whales. The Natural Area's system of man-made ocean tide pools at Quarry Cove is an entertaining place to find tiny tide pool creatures, and is wheelchair accessible. The Interpretive Center has many different displays, from tide pool life to lighthouse life. Numerous fishing charters are available to take visitors out for salmon and bottom fishing. Crabbing and clamming are also excellent in Yaquina Bay. Crab pots, clam shovels and guns and other equipment can be rented at local tackle shops. They will also offer tips on tides and techniques for a successful trip to the beach. Bay Boulevard is a popular tourist area, where restaurants, galleries, shops, and attractions such as Ripley's Believe it or Not, the Waxworks Museum and the Undersea Gardens are side by side with working canneries and fish-packing plants. Visitors can also sign up for bay tours and whale watching tours on the bayfront. Crabbing trips are available, and many of the charter boats have facilities for cooking the crabs back at the docks, for an additional fee. Some lodging establishments have crab rings for rent, as well as crab cookers for guests to use. Parking can be hard to find, so it pays to go early, or visit during a walk around town.
